And y but son conjunciones que se utilizan para unir oraciones que de otro modo serían independientes e irían separadas por un punto.
And
- Se utiliza para relatar acontecimientos en orden cronológico
de modo que los que ocurrieron primero se mencionaran en primer lugar en la
frase resultante:
He had breakfast.
He washed his teeth.
He had breakfast and washed his teeth.
Si el sujeto de las dos oraciones es el mismo, al unir las dos oraciones no lo repetiremos sino que en la segunda quedará elíptico. - También une oraciones que dan información sobre algo o
alguien:
They were students.
They had a loft in Manhattan.
They were painters and had a loft in Manhattan.
But
- Al utilizar but mostramos sorpresa respecto a la
información que se da, o bien manifestamos que no lo esperábamos:
They were students.
They had a loft in Manhattan.
They were students but had a loft in Manhattan.
Nos sorprende que puedan tener ese alojamiento en Manhattan.
I took the train.
I forgot my ticket at home.
I took the train but I didn’t get a ticket.
Aquí manifestamos el contraste entre lo que se hizo y lo que normalmente se esperaría que hiciéramos.
